Keyword density is one of the oldest ideas in SEO. In the early days of search, repeating a keyword many times could push a page up the rankings. Search engines have become far smarter since then, but density is still a useful health check for your writing.
What keyword density means
Keyword density is the share of words in your text that belong to a specific keyword. If the two word phrase "running shoes" appears 6 times in a 600 word article, it takes up 12 words, which is a density of 2 percent.
Is there an ideal percentage?
Google has never published a target, and there is no magic number. In practice, most well ranking pages use their main keyword at a density of roughly 0.5 to 2.5 percent, simply because they talk about the topic naturally. Going far above that usually reads badly and can look like keyword stuffing, which is against Google's spam policies.
Where your keyword matters most
- In the page title and the main H1 heading.
- Early in the first paragraph, so readers know they are in the right place.
- In at least one subheading, where it fits naturally.
- In the meta description and the URL slug.
Placement in these spots does more than repeating the keyword in every paragraph.
Use related words instead of repetition
Modern search engines understand topics, not just exact words. A page about running shoes that also mentions cushioning, sizing, trail, marathon and beginner is more convincing than one that repeats "running shoes" twenty times. Find these supporting terms with our Related Keywords Finder and real search suggestions with the Keyword Suggestion Tool.

A quick checklist
- 1Write for the reader first, then check density afterwards.
- 2Make sure the main keyword appears in the title, H1, first paragraph and meta description.
- 3Keep density under about 2.5 percent for the main keyword.
- 4Replace extra repetitions with synonyms and related terms.
- 5Read the text aloud. If it sounds unnatural, it probably is.
