Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the PDF Compress Tool.

How does the PDF compressor work?

Recommended and Strong levels redraw each page as an optimised image at a lower resolution, which is very effective for scanned and photo heavy PDFs. The Basic level keeps pages as they are and only removes unused data, which preserves selectable text.

Will my text still be selectable after compression?

With the Basic level, yes. With Recommended and Strong, pages become images, so text can no longer be selected or searched. Keep your original file if you need to copy text later.

Which compression level should I use?

Use Recommended for most scanned documents, as it balances readability and size. Use Strong when a portal has a very small size limit. Use Basic for text documents created in Word or other apps.

Why did my PDF not get smaller?

PDFs created from Word or other software are often already efficient, especially if they contain mostly text. Try the Strong level for image based files, or keep the original if it is already small.

How can I compress a PDF to under 200 KB?

Use the Strong level. Most scanned pages end up around 50 to 150 KB each. If the file has many pages, consider splitting it or removing pages that are not required.
