Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the XML Sitemap Generator.
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists the important URLs on your website, often with dates showing when they changed. It helps search engines find and crawl your pages, especially new pages and pages with few internal links.
How do I submit my sitemap to Google?
Upload sitemap.xml to your website's root folder, then open Google Search Console, choose your property, go to Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL and click Submit. You can also add a Sitemap line to your robots.txt file.
Do priority and change frequency matter?
Google has said it largely ignores priority and changefreq and relies on its own signals, but accurate lastmod dates can help. Other search engines may still read these values, so including them does no harm.
How many URLs can a sitemap contain?
A single sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and be up to 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites should split URLs into several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.
Why does Find Pages not find all my pages?
Find Pages reads the links on the page you enter, usually your homepage. Pages that are not linked from it, or are only reachable through menus built with JavaScript, will not appear. Paste any missing URLs into the list yourself.
