Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Image to Text (OCR).

What is OCR?

OCR stands for optical character recognition. It is technology that recognizes printed or typed letters in an image and converts them into real, editable text you can copy, search and edit.

How can I get the most accurate results?

Use a sharp, well lit image with the text straight and not too small. Crop away busy backgrounds, avoid shadows and glare, and choose the correct language. Screenshots of digital text usually give near perfect results.

Can it read handwriting?

The engine is designed for printed and typed text. Very neat handwriting may partly work, but cursive and messy writing usually gives poor results.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The OCR engine runs on your device. For languages other than English, the language data file is downloaded once from a public library, but your image itself never leaves your browser.

Why is the first scan slow?

The first time, your browser downloads the OCR engine and language data, which are a few megabytes. They are cached, so later scans start much faster.
