Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Character Counter.
Does the character count include spaces?
The main Characters number includes spaces, line breaks and punctuation. The Without Spaces number removes every kind of white space, which is what some forms and translation agencies ask for. Both are shown side by side so you can use whichever you need.
What is the ideal length for an SEO title and meta description?
Google usually shows about 50 to 60 characters of a title and around 150 to 160 characters of a description on desktop. Staying inside those ranges reduces the chance of your text being cut off with an ellipsis. Google measures in pixels, so wide letters like W take more space than narrow ones like i.
How many characters can I use on X (Twitter)?
A standard post on X allows 280 characters. Links count as 23 characters no matter how long they are, and some languages such as Chinese and Japanese count each character as two. The bar in this tool uses the simple 280 limit as a quick guide.
Are emojis counted as one character?
This tool counts most emojis as a single character, just as you see them. Some platforms count certain emojis as two characters because of how they are stored, so leave yourself a small buffer when you are very close to a strict limit.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. You can safely count passwords, private messages or unpublished work.
