Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Syllable Counter.

How accurate is the syllable count?

The counter uses proven English pronunciation rules plus a list of common exceptions, and it is accurate for the large majority of everyday words. English spelling is irregular, so a few unusual words, names and loanwords may be off by one syllable. For strict poetry forms, double check those words by saying them aloud.

Can I count syllables for a haiku?

Yes. Paste each line separately, or paste the whole poem and check each word in the breakdown. A traditional English haiku has 5, 7 and 5 syllables across its three lines.

Why do syllables matter for readability?

Formulas like Flesch Reading Ease and Gunning Fog use the average number of syllables per word. Text with many words of three or more syllables is usually harder to read, so lowering that number makes content more accessible.

Does it support languages other than English?

The rules are designed for English. Other languages that use the Latin alphabet will get a rough estimate, but the result may not be reliable for languages with very different spelling rules.
