Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Sentence Counter.

How does the tool decide where a sentence ends?

A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space or the end of the text. Common abbreviations such as Mr., Dr., e.g. and i.e., and numbers like 3.5, are protected so they are not counted as sentence endings.

What is a good average sentence length?

For web content, an average of 15 to 20 words per sentence is easy for most people to read. Academic writing can be longer, but mixing short and medium sentences keeps any text lively. Sentences over 25 words are worth a second look.

Why are some sentences highlighted in yellow?

Sentences with 25 or more words are highlighted because they are often harder to follow, especially on a phone screen. You do not have to change all of them, but splitting the longest ones usually makes your writing clearer.

Does it work with bullet points and lists?

Yes, but list items without ending punctuation may be joined with the next line into one sentence. For the most accurate count, end each list item with a full stop or count lists separately from your paragraphs.
