Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Spell Checker.

Which dictionary does the spell checker use?

It uses a large open source English (US) dictionary with tens of thousands of base words plus their plural, past tense and other forms. That means words like "color" are correct, while British spellings such as "colour" may be flagged. For British English, use our Grammar Checker with English (UK) selected.

What is the difference between the Spell Checker and the Grammar Checker?

The Spell Checker focuses only on spelling and works entirely offline in your browser, which makes it very private. The Grammar Checker also looks at grammar, punctuation and style, and supports several languages and English variants.

Why is a name or brand flagged as misspelled?

Proper names, new brand names and technical jargon are often missing from standard dictionaries. Click the small x on the suggestion to ignore it. Ignored words are not changed when you use Fix all.

Is there a limit on text length?

No hard limit. Suggestions are generated for the first 120 misspelled words to keep things fast, and every misspelled word is still highlighted. For very long documents, checking chapter by chapter feels quickest.
