Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the UUID Generator.
What is a UUID?
A UUID, or universally unique identifier, is a 128 bit value usually written as 32 hexadecimal characters in five groups, like 123e4567-e89b-42d3-a456-426614174000. It is used to identify records without a central authority.
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
In theory yes, but version 4 UUIDs have 122 random bits, so the chance of a collision is astronomically small. You could generate a billion UUIDs every second for decades before a duplicate became likely.
What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?
They are the same thing. GUID, or globally unique identifier, is the name Microsoft uses, often shown in uppercase with braces. Use the format options here to match either style.
Are these UUIDs secure?
They are generated with the browser's cryptographically secure random generator. Even so, UUIDs are identifiers, not secrets, so do not use them as passwords or access tokens.
